Sirens are of Greek origin and it is said that they have the heads of women and bodies of birds. Some also believe that the Sirens have female anatomy from the thighs up and mermaid bodies from the thighs down. Here are a few pictures.

I did not find anything that made me think there was a cultural crossover. I do think that other cultures may have heard of these stories besides the romans and greeks. I'm not either of those and neither are most of the people in my class, but we've heard of this monster and many others.
This isn't anything that you need to know, but I read that West Indian Manatees come from the Order Sirenia which is named after the sirens. Another thing I heard about was a band that was named Sirenia. They got their name from the sirens because the sirens were known for their beautiful voices and enchanting music. They say they are trying to live up to what the sirens represent.
You can find a portrayal of the sirens in the movie The Odyssey or read about them in the book The Odyssey.

As you can see the first picture shows the sirens with half mermaid bodies and the second picture shows them with almost whole bird bodies.
Most people who have heard of the sirens believe that there are only 3, but recently I read that there are more than 3 names: Aglape, Leucosia 2, Parthenope 3, Pisinoe 1 and Thelxiepia. It would seem that there may be more than just 3 sirens, but there are only 3 needed to do the job.

    Odysseus is known for passing
    ...
    their death.
A short story that I read about the sirens was that Hera actually convinced the sirens to compete with the muses. The muses are invincible and of course beat the sirens with their heavenly music. For this the muses plucked out all the sirens' feathers and made crowns for themselves to wear.
Sirens are still being used in products and even as company names. There is a website called mermaidpirates.com where you can purchase original paintings of the mythological monsters. Another website is midnight-muse.com. They too sell paintings of the sirens. I also came across a website called seasirenswimwear.com. Instead of selling siren items they sell swimwear under that company name.
